2014 – Life Lessons

You have to admit, that image is awesome.. Yes? And before you think of it…..The answer is NO!! I’m not getting married 😛

2014 was an interesting year. Alot happened, I made mistakes, I made new friends and the year ended well. Let’s just say I learnt a lot through my mistakes. Yes I made a looooot of them. Join me in this journey and get a glimpse of some of the lessons I learnt last year. 🙂

1. O-M-G Moment

Hold on – It’s not what you are thinking. It’s the “One Minute of Gratitude.”

Take a minute and count your blessing. You need to remind yourself to be grateful, and there is no better way to do that than to put it down on paper. Close your laptop and grab a notepad… I am waiting…. 🙂 Good. Just take a minute and jot down all or some of the things you are grateful for. You’ll be amazed at how quickly motivation finds you again.

Everyone has low moments. You get bogged down by lack of motivation. A simple way to get things going is to do an OMG.

Did you do your OMG? Here is what I came up with. I’m grateful for:

  • Having God in my Life – It’s all because of Him.
  • My awesome family.
  • Great friends.
  • Good influencers and mentors. (Shout out to Kenn & Linda. Aheeeeeem)
  • Crazy brothers.
  • The Akirachix Program.
  • Having the ability to chase after my own dreams.

2. Power of your Mind

Your mind is the most powerful weapon you will ever have, well that’s if you use it. I am not talking about Lucy. (Bluuurrgh. I wish I watched paint dry) ……
Back to the mind…. Your body does what the mind tell it and you control your own mind.

  • Be careful of what thoughts you accept.
  • Get rid of toxic thoughts.
  • Be who you want to be.
  • The only thing stopping you from achieving your dreams is yourself.
  • To dream by night is to escape your life. To dream by day is to make it happen.

3. Learn to say NO!

Many of us suffer from the ‘Disease to please’.

“For every YES you give, you will have to say no to something else”. You need to remember, if you keep taking on more and more, you’ll inevitably get less and less of really important stuff done.
When you say “YES” to many things, your mind is scattered. We are afraid of saying no because we will hurt the other person’s feelings. Well truth is you end up hurting yourself. I am sure if you express yourself well they will understand.

Don’t get overloaded. Just say “no” more.

4. Keep going

There are times when things will be tough. The easiest way out all the is to give up. I will not lie, there are times I thought of giving up. If you love what you do and do what you love like me, you get bug on your feet and show your “problem” who’s boss. 🙂 “When you are going through hell, keep going”.

5. Get a Mentor

Get an influencer on your field, talk with your boss or call someone you admire. Oooh my boss is cooler than yours 😛 “Ken Njoroge”. Take five minutes and talk to them. Trust me, they can never say no.

Build a relationship with people you aspire to be. This is the fastest way for you to reach their level of success.

6. “No Phone at work Policy.”

Your Phone is the biggest distraction. I learnt this from my colleague at work. It is one of the hardest thing I had to learn.

Having notifications on your device will constantly distract you from what is important. Notifications also send you down rabbit holes. How many times has that promise to “Just check one FB notification” turned into 15 minutes of lost time.

Sometimes even turning off WIFI off your computer or turning off notification helps. This is an easy way to keep those notification from sneaking in to ruin your focus.

Value your focus and keep those pesky distractions away.

7. Define your Definite Purpose

Set a definite purpose for each task that you are going to work on. This helps you focus on what you really need to do and helps you focus.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why am I doing this today?
  • What is the intention
  • What will that move me towards?
  • What will be the next step?

7. Clean Out A Drawer

When all else fails, go clean a drawer. There are times you will get stuck in a rut, and you feel unproductive and unmotivated or even worse, you want to give up. Well, I have been there. You need a small dose of positivity to get going, a small feeling of accomplishments that proves you can get stuff done.

The simple act of cleaning out a drawer will help you clear your mind and give you a sense of accomplishment. Plus you will get a tidy drawer! 🙂

8. Multitasking is A Lie.

Multitasking is a lie. It just doesn’t work. Ladies, calm down. I know what you are about to say. Hear me out. I am talking about projects.

Simply put: Multitasking means doing lots of things poorly. It also means that each project gets dragged out for longer because you’ll be simultaneously working on both but each individual project is allocated less effort.

9. Set Expectations

It’s important to set expectations because lack of expectations means working less effective. Just like goals, expectations should be specific, measurable and clear.

Be explicit and always WRITE them down. Writing down

has a real power to getting yourself to commit.

10. Find an Accountabilibuddy

We all set new year resolutions. The cycle is the same every year. Most of us have nothing done. Have you ever taken time to ask yourself why that happens? Well I have an answer for you. No one is accountable.

Find someone you can communicate to at least twice a week. We need someone at some point in our lives, to keep us motivated and moving forward. Make sure they have the best interests in mind and can support you in whatever you are doing. They will not let you off the hook easily and will tell you when you make a mistake. If they fulfill the roles above, then they are your accountabilibuddy.

I can keep going but let me press the pause button now. I will write another blog with more lessons.

11. Learn To Make Mistakes

Mistakes are not so bad. If you have not made any mistakes, you have never tried anything. You have the freedom of making mistakes. What more do you need. The true measure of success is how many times you can bounce back from failure.

Break the rules, don’t bend them. 😀 “We learn from mistakes, not success!” Come to think of it success is a result of the mistakes you make. So what are you waiting for???

I think I have said more than enough. Question is, will you be your own boss and accept and be ready to try out new things??

Cannot find any VM in Java_Home – Mac

This is going to be a short one. so let’s get to it.

Today was one of those days you go past page 5 searching for an answer in Google. Hopefully you will not have to go through the same process I did to get a fix.

I have been working with daemons and i hit a snag. The VM/JVM not found snag.

I got the following error when running the daemon: “Cannot find any VM in Java Home /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_71.jdk/Contents/Home
Cannot locate JVM library file”

After scrolling through the web I finally got a fix.

Solution:

Open terminal and type the following commands:

NB: Replace jdk1.7.0_71.jdk with your jdk version.

$ cd /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_71.jdk/Contents
$ sudo ln -s Home/jre/lib Libraries
$ cd Libraries
$ sudo ln -s server/libjvm.dylib libserver.dylib

That’s it. Problem solved 🙂

Let me get back to what I love doing, saving the world.
